Orthognathic Surgery

Orthognathic surgery, also known as corrective jaw surgery, is performed by an oral and maxillofacial surgeon and used to correct skeletal conditions of the jaw and face related to structure, growth or other orthodontic problems that cannot be easily treated with braces alone. Open bites (space between the upper and lower teeth when the mouth is closed), protruding jaw, and receding lower jaw and chin are examples of common problems treated with jaw surgery.

The orthodontist and oral and maxillofacial surgeon work closely together to plan and coordinate all orthognathic surgery treatments. We have exceptional working relationships with several oral and maxillofacial surgeons in the area. Orthodontic treatment is an integral part of corrective jaw surgery. It is preferable to have the teeth aligned and straightened with brace before the surgical procedure begins. After the surgical procedure the same braces are used to finish correcting the bite.

If you’re interested in adult braces to straighten your crooked teeth, call Palm Tree Orthodontics in Lakeland, Palm Harbor, Spring Hill and New Port Richey, FL for an appointment.
